John R. lives on the East Coast and primarily flies within the East Coast and Midwest. He is the owner of a 1998 Mooney M20R Ovation with FIKI-certified TKS Ice Protection.
How did you get started in aviation?
Aviation has been an interest of mine since I was 10 years old.
Why did you choose TKS?
I chose TKS because I was convinced that the fluid would be much more efficient in preventing / eliminating airframe ice versus the old technology boots.
What did TKS do for your mission?
From 2008 until 2011, I was flying every week to Newport News, Virginia for work. The TKS system allowed me to reliably make the trip.
Have you had any memorable experiences with TKS?
The most memorable experience I have had with the TKS system actually occurred on the flight home after having the system installed. I encountered a significant icing situation flying from Salina, Kansas back to the East Coast. I had to divert to Columbus, Ohio. The windshield picked up significant ice but the airframe was ice free due to the system. On the initial approach, fluid on the windshield cleared the windscreen in seconds and I was able to fly an ILS approach in snow at minimums.
